Facebook Expects to Be Fined Up to $5 Billion by the FTC in Privacy Probe, Would Shatter Previous Such Record Fine by $4.98 Billion

In its latest quarter’s earnings call, Facebook said it expected to be fined up to $5 billion by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) for privacy violations, which would be a record for the FTC against a technology company. The previous such record fine was only $22 million, levied against Google in 2012 for misrepresenting some of its online tracking tools. Facebook has been working with the FTC on an investigation that the social media giant violated a 2011 consent decree when it provided users data to controversial political data analysis firm Cambridge Analytica without users’ consent.

FTC Asks Congress to Regulate How Big Tech Companies Collect and Handle User Data, Seeks Greater Ability to Police Violations and Impose Fines

In testimony before the House Energy and Commerce subcommittee on consumer protection, members of the Federal Trade Commission on Wednesday reiterated their calls for Congress to create a national privacy law that would regulate how big tech companies like Facebook and Google collect and handle user data. Joseph Simons, the agency’s chairman, urged Congress to adopt a new privacy law and strengthen the agency’s ability to policy violations and levy fines. The FTC is currently trying to hammer out a precedent-fine of up to $5 billion against Facebook for violating a 2011 privacy settlement with the agency for giving political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica access to millions of users records without their permission.
