Russia’s Channel One Says Hackers Probably Leaked Sherlock Finale Online

Russia’s Channel One is investigating the leak of the Russian language version of the hit BBC series Sherlock’s final episode, called The Final Problem, online one day before it aired on Channel One. Channel One said that it has preliminarily concluded that the episode was compromised by an unauthorized external third party, which indicates that the program was probably hacked from the outside.

China’s Government Orders App Stores to Register, Says Security Risks a Factor

The Chinese government on Friday ordered through its Cyberspace Administration that all mobile apps must be officially registered with authorities. Starting today, the Administration must ensure that records are kept on app stories throughout the country. Although a sign of a growing desire for control over the Internet in China, the notice posted by the Cyberspace Administration regarding the new rules stated that in addition to spreading “illegal” information or violating “user rights,” many mobile apps contain security risks. The government wants to make sure that it knows which provider will take responsibility for the problems cited.

New Highly Effective Phishing Technique Targets GMail Users to Steal Account Info

A new highly effective phishing technique is targeting GMail users to steal user names and passwords. Under this technique, an attacker sends emails to Gmail accounts that appear to come from known senders, who have also had their accounts attacked with this technique, with attached images recognized by the recipients. When recipients click on the attachments, they are sent to fully functional Gmail login page at which point they have been compromised.

Despite Growing Cybersec Awareness, ‘123456’ is Still Most Common Password

Despite growing efforts to promote cybersecurity awareness, the most popular password that appeared in ten million breached accounts examined by security firm Keeper Security in 2016 was “123456,” reflecting 17% of the records. The second most popular password was “123456789,” followed by “qwerty.” Seven of the top fifteen passwords used six characters or fewer and the eight most common password was “password.”
